Let’s start this new year of blogging with one of the most iconic views of Venice. The picture of Santa Maria della Salute church, from the Accademia bridge, is one of those that everyone who is visiting Venice doesn’t want to miss, from the pro photographer to the most absent-minded point and shoot owner. But from just clicking the shutter in front of a cityscape that inspired thousands of painters and photographers, to taking home a picture that will fill your eyes with joy, a lot of water passes under the bridge! 😉 And many things need to be considered. As usual, some tips can be very useful, and I am going to share some of them every week. Let’s start with the basics: wake up early. Timing is essential in photography. Being there early will put you in the favorite condition to be on the site almost alone, that’s a pretty good advantage considering that during the day you could have to fight with a crowd to take your pictures; moreover the sun will rise right behind the church cupolas, giving often gorgeous colors to the sky over the church. Another tip for you is be aware of the small movement of the bridge itself: being built with wood boards it is quite susceptible to the people walking, that can cause a micro blur on your longest exposures.
That’s all folks. See you next week with another picture of one of the most iconic view in Venice.
Location: Accademia bridge, over the Grand Canal (Canal Grande), the major water-traffic corridor of Venice.
What to shot: The Grand Canal with its pompous buildings and the church of Santa Maria della Salute.
Ideal time to shot: At sunrise you can frame with the sun just behind the church of Santa Maria della Salute. Also for this reason this site has become one of the favorite spots by many local and foreigner photographers. At night the church’s cupolas are amazingly illuminated.
Gear: Wide angle to standard zooms.
How to get there: By foot is just a short walk (10 to 15 minutes) both from St. Mark Square and from the railway station. Public transport water bus station Accademia (line 1, 2).
Coordinates: 45°25′54″N 12°19′44″E
Stunning!
What was the length of your exposure time for this photo?
I’ll try to get my lazy bones out of bed early next visit …
Hi Yvonne! This is a 300 seconds exposure at f/13. There was some movements on the canal, boats, waterbus and so on. I enjoyed taking some pictures with the trafic on display, but decided to try some shot “erasing” those traces of life.. and this is the result! Waking up early is really worthy sometimes, most of all you can enjoy the peacefullness of the city! 😉
I’ll be in Florence in March and April, then Venice in May. Let me know if your travels take you there at that time!
Beautiful picture. I look forward to next week’s shot 🙂
Thank you so much richardtreehouse! I’ve not decided yet, but I am working on a couple of pictures of Venice, no big travels in program till April, so I am going to enjoy my own city for now! 😉
Awesome Venice.
Preciosa foto.
Saludos
Gracias! Muchos saludos desde Venecia y feliz año nuevo! 🙂
Feliz Año Nuevo, igualmente para tí.
Quizá hacia la primavera podamos vernos por Venecia; espero que pueda sera así.
Saludos-
Wonderful photo. it looks like you could just walk out on the water it is so still. Thanks for the tips.
Awesome shot, makes the water look like frosted glass.
Perfect photo of my second favorite city. (Rome being the first)
Such a beautiful shot.
I love the stillness. Canada, where I live, is a young country, 1867 we came into our own. Europe, Venice, the historic old buildings are just so beautiful. Besides the beauty of the buildings, the stillness and colour of the water is amazing.
Your images ALWAYS bring a smile to my face, make me feel good, and stir the wanderlust in me. Thank you!
Wonderful click! 🙂
Bellissima Bruno. Devo davvero imparare a usare le pose lunghe. 😉
Buon anno!
Grazie Stefano! Io invece sono sempre impressionato dalle tue foto di viaggio! Buon anno anche a te, qui a casa siamo tutti curiosi di vedere quanti altri paesi visiterai quest’anno! 🙂
A very fine photo. We went down an hour before sunrise. Not a soul there. It took about 30 minutes from the Londra Palace at about 5am! I’d love to experiment more – I don’t think I shot an exposure longer than 3 minutes.
You really went there with Mrs. Ha? My girlfriend doesn’t even show herself at that time in the morning! 😉 I’m really loving to play with long exposures at this time, this morning I took a 20 minutes one from rialto bridge 😉
It looks so silent!
It really was! 😉
Yeah, I got my version on this page:

A bit more zoomed… a bit busier…
I like your version very much.
There’s something about Venice when it’s still, that I have felt in very few other places around th world.
Gorgeous and tranquil. Beautiful!
Beautiful!
I like the dreamy quality of the image. Beautiful.
Thanks so much Simona. Some mornings here are really dreamy! 🙂 Ciao!
Wonderful shot to start the year Brubio – you know your city well. I especially like your choice to have a relatively flat sky and water, which allows one’s eye to follow the buildings on either side. I look forward to seeing more of your shots in 2015.
Cheers,
John
